Architecture, The Art And Science Of Creating Spaces, Can Impact A Small Community In A Powerful Way.

OUR MISSION

Building takes place in the Jalapa Valley of Nuevo Segovia, Nicaragua.  Witness to the most intense conflict between the Sandinista and Contra fighters in the 1980’s, today it is a peaceful agricultural community.  The agricultural resources provide a lively hood for residents, though most will earn less than the equivalent of $3 per day.

The goal of the Undergraduate Design Build course sequence is to work with the community and the non profit Boulder-Jalapa Friendship City Projects to design and deliver a building that will open up opportunities for education and community services.  Over 80% of the local population will benefit directly from the additional social services that will be made possible by the new community center. Us students, in turn, will have the real world experience of working within a rapid delivery schedule, participation in service learning, and the benefit of cultural exchange. Together a connection is made that will change the future.

Architecture is really about well-being. I think that people want to feel good in a space ... On the one hand it’s about shelter, but it’s also about pleasure.
